My daughter is having a hard time understanding why I don’t work where I used to anymore. Explaining how you got laid off is difficult enough to do with adults, much less an eleven year old.

Here are some bits of advice:

  1. Be honest – tell your child what happened at their level.  Maybe use a metaphor like a lemonade stand.
  2. Don’t be alarmed or upset when you do talk to them – kids pick up on your energy/attitude; remain calm.
  3. Assure them that they and you are going to be fine and layoffs happen all the time.
  4. Involve them – ask them if they would like to help you.  Maybe they can help proofread a resume or even sit with you and search for jobs.

I would tell my daughter that as long as she’s eating and has a roof over her head to mind her own business. Michelle does well with being direct and your daughter might as well.

Shannon has a point. Kids need to be kids. Tell your daughter to mind her own F’ing bidness – go back to playing Wii or texting her friends.
